Devil Dish: Money can't buy Yankees wins

I see the Yankees haven't learned the lesson that buying players doesn't equate to a World Series title.

After already sporting the largest payroll in baseball, now the rumor is the Yanks are after Arizona's Curt Schilling, arguably the best right-handed pitcher in the National League.

When the Yankees won four championships in five years from 1996-2000, they not only had superstar players like Derek Jeter, but also guys like Paul O'Neil and Tino Martinez who were great team leaders.

But since O'Neil and Martinez have departed, owner George Steinbrenner has theorized that he can buy the best players to replace them, such has Jason Giambi and Mike Mussina.

Just look at the Mets or Dodgers as an example. A team can have talent and still lose. The Angels and Marlins have proven the last two years that chemistry and leadership are the keys to winning, not money. Unfortunately for New York fans, it appears that theory is something Steinbrenner won't buy.
