With the collapse of the Women's United Soccer Association and the start of the Women's World Cup tomorrow in Philadelphia, this may seem an odd time to talk about men's soccer, but here it is:
College men's soccer is a thriving, competitive sport that deserves field time in Tempe, alongside the ASU women's soccer team in the Pac-10.
The reason commonly given for ASU's lack of an NCAA men's soccer team is Title IX, which stipulates that men's and women's college sports receive equal funding.
732 colleges sponsor NCAA men's soccer teams across the country. All of these colleges are also subject to Title IX, but unlike ASU, they have managed to balance the men's side of the sports budget accordingly.
ASU, with perfect soccer weather and a huge and internationally diverse student body, has both the fan support and the talent pool to cheer on another "football" team.
