Janitors discover chemical leak

A chemical leak in the Cancer Research Building last night spooked three ASU janitors who discovered it while cleaning a second-floor lab.

After the leak had been controlled by Tempe firefighters at 12:45 a.m., the janitors, whose names weren't immediately available, were checked for possible contamination to the unknown chemical, according to ASU spokesman Keith Jennings.

The janitors called Tempe firefighters to the scene at around 11:30 p.m., Jennings said. A hazardous materials crew was still investigating the origin and identity of the chemical late last night.

Jennings said that it didn't appear any of the janitors were suffering any ill effects from exposure to the chemical. "At this point, I think there's just a little panic on their part," he said.

Researchers in the building use various chemicals to define anti-cancer components, Jennings said.
