Tempe is finalist to host 2004 presidential debate


Tempe's bid to host a 2004 U.S. presidential candidate debate at ASU's Gammage Auditorium has been officially selected.

Presidential candidates partake in three debates prior to the election. Tempe is one of 14 cities that have made it to the final round of host city hopefuls.

The Commission on Presidential Debates will spend the next several months visiting the finalist sites and will select three in November.

The sites, released Thursday, are:

Arizona State University - Tempe, Ariz.

Belmont University - Nashville, Tenn.

Case Western Reserve - Cleveland, Ohio

Centre College - Danville, Ky.

Columbus State University - Columbus, Ga.

Greater Pittsburgh Convention and Visitors Bureau - Pittsburgh, Pa.

National Public Radio

Rochester Institute of Technology - Rochester, N.Y.

University of Kansas - Lawrence, Kan.

University of Miami - Miami, Fla.

University of North Carolina at Charlotte - Charlotte, N.C.

University of South Carolina - Columbia, S.C.

Vanderbilt University - Nashville, Tenn.

Washington University - St. Louis, Mo.
