Letters to the Editor: Picking on Douglass, women 'idiotic'

New idiot in town

If Eric Spratling is running for the position of the most outrageous and idiotic conservative columnist in The State Press (a title currently held by Shanna Bowman), then he is certainly on his way. In his satire that ran Monday, "Sinister Republican Plot Revealed," he not only mocks Frederick Douglass (a writer who Spratling could never hope to even live up to), but women, the poor and environmentalists.

"Herr Bush" does want to take away a woman's right to control her own body. In addition, he does want to repeal some progressive taxes, like the estate tax, to help his rich cronies. Further, he does want to weaken environmental laws and the EPA (which was founded under Nixon). Spratling claims that his plan, according to the ASU directory, is "tracking down stupidity across the world, and punching it." Well then, perhaps he should consider punching himself.

What "support" means

First off, I agree with Max Werner's column when he argues that protesting the war has absolutely no correlation with being "anti-troops." His central claim is that the best way to support our troops is to oppose the war, but in making this claim he resorts to the same dualistic thinking that he criticizes others for employing.

What does it mean to "support" our troops? If all it means is to make it so that none of them die, then Mr. Werner's answer makes sense. But in the context of the war with Iraq, it makes much more sense to view supporting our troops as a desire to have them succeed in battle with a minimum number of casualties. In war people die - it's an unfortunate reality. Let's continue to discuss our reasons for fighting this war without using the lives of our troops as rhetorical pawns.

Boo to the editors

As an avid New York Yankees fan, I wanted to let the editorial board know that they are morons for making that comment about Derek Jeter in Tuesday's "Boos and Bravos." First off, the fact that they would give praise to Ken Huckaby for injuring Jeter clearly means that they are not fans of the sport. Also, what Derek brings to New York is a lot more than a bat and glove.

Derek is a leader, a role model and a future hall of famer. The D-backs would be lucky to have someone like that. I just hope that one day Randy Johnson creeps his old bones to the mound, and his arm falls off during warm-ups, letting everyone in Arizona who jumped on the bandwagon fall off with it. Just remember one thing: When the Yankees were winning championships and playing at the polo grounds, Arizona wasn't even a state.
