With Arizona's next governor only several precincts away from being determined, a handful of supporters stood around independent candidate Richard Mahoney's campaign headquarters anxiously waiting.
But the candidate was nowhere to be found.
By 12:55 a.m. Wednesday, with 94.4 percent of voter precincts accounted for, 67,477 votes had been counted in Mahoney's favor though his supporters had no idea where he was.
"I have no clue where he's at," said Marla Wing, a Mahoney supporter. "He should've already been here."
Proudly wearing a "Mahoney for Governor" shirt, Wing waited at the headquarters because she helped him on his campaign by putting him on the ballot by circulating petitions. She also put up campaign signs around the Valley.
"I'm sad he's not here tonight because he's the main man," Wing said.
Another Mahoney supporter, computer technician Scott Malcomson, had attempted a run for the governor's seat but dropped out due to lack of funds.
After leaving the race, Malcomson said he decided to back Mahoney because he was the only real reform candidate.
"He's got the most comprehensible and sensible platform," Malcomson said. "He's the best person for the job."
Malcomson added that he went to Mahoney's headquarters last night for a specific purpose.
"I came to hear him speak and to congratulate him for running," Malcomson said. "I am rather irritated, frankly, that he did not show up."
