ASU tacked on three more touchdowns in the third quarter to raise their point total above 50 for the first time this season.

Sophomore quarterback Andrew Walter threw his fifth touchdown of the game, a 44-yard strike to sophomore wideout Daryl Lightfoot, to help the Sun Devils pull away from the Cardinal entering the fourth quarter.

Freshman tailback Cornell Canidate scored his third and fourth touchdowns of the game in the third quarter.

ASU linebacker Mason Unck has forced two fumbles in the game. At the beginning of the fourth quarter, he tipped a pass to safety Joey Smith, who intercepted it.

Junior defensive end Terrell Suggs also notched an interception late in the third quarter, which he returned for 22 yards. His pick set up Canidate's fourth touchdown.

Freshman quarterback Chad Christensen replaced Walter at the beginning of the fourth quarter.

Walter left the game after completing 22 of 37 passes for 413 yards and five touchdowns.

Halftime

Sophomore quarterback Andrew Walter seems to be playing with newfound confidence, stength and grace today at Sun Devil Stadium.

In the first quarter, he'd already thrown for a career-high passing yards. At halftime, he's carved up the Stanford seconday for four touchdown passes.

The score at halftime, after a 36-yard field goal by senior kicker Mike Barth, is 38-16 in favor of the Sun Devils.

Walter hit junior wideout Skyler Fulton for a 14-yard touchdown with under four minutes remaining in the second quarter. That play made up for an "illegal backs in motion" penalty which negated a 14-yard run by freshman tailback Cornell Candidate. The touchdown would have been Canidate's third of the game.

Veteran ASU linebackers Mason Unck and Josh Amobi set up the touchdown by Fulton with a forced fumble. Amobi recovered the ball after the hit by Unck. It was their second such play in the game.

1st Quarter

The first quarter of the Sun Devils' PAC-10 opener against Stanford has been fast-paced, high scoring and shockingly lop-sided in favor of the home team.

ASU leads their conference opponents 28-13 at the start of the second quarter at Sun Devil Stadium.

With five seconds left, Walter connected with senior tight end Mike Pinkard for a 27-yard touchdown- Walter's third of the first quarter.

Canidate scored two of ASU's four touchdowns. Walter found him from nine yards out as the culmination of a 91-yard Sun Devil scoring drive. Canidate's other score was on third and goal.

After the opening kick-off, Stanford's junior quarterback Chris Lewis needed only two plays and just over one minute to put the Cardinal on the board.

However, ASU sophomore quarterback Andrew Walter answered his counterpart quickly with a 27-yard touchdown pass to junior wideout Shaun McDonald.

Walter notched 202 passing yards in the first quarter. ASU's offense totaled 434.

Stanford's senior fullback Casey Moore ran up the gut for a 68-yard touchdown to make it 14-13 in favor of ASU after the Cardinal failed to tie the game with an extra point.

Stanford also missed another scoring opportunity in the first quarter on a fake field goal attempt when the holder threw to Moore, who was sprinting towards the sideline. The ball went off his fingertips and ASU took over.

With under three minutes remaining in the quarter, Unck hit Stanford tailback J.R. Lemon hard enough to force a fumble. The ball was picked up by Amobi and returned to the Stanford 10-yard line. Canidate scored as a result.
