A 27-year-old Tempe man was arrested Tuesday after a seven-hour standoff with police in a neighborhood near ASU.
Scott McWhorter allegedly shot a 12-gauge pistol grip shotgun in Hudson Park near Spence Avenue and Cedar Street on Tuesday morning. When contacted by police at 10:04 a.m., McWhorter aimed the gun at two officers and cocked the weapon, Tempe police spokesman Sgt. Randy Fougner said.
The man then fled to his nearby residence in the 1400 block of South Kenneth Place. He refused to leave the apartment until 5:35 p.m. and was then arrested by police, Fougner said.
Police blocked off Spence Avenue and Kenneth Place for most of the day.
McWhorter is charged with disorderly conduct and misconduct involving weapons, which are both class six felony charges. McWhorter could face between one and five years in prison for each of the offenses.
McWhorter was prohibited to possess a firearm, but officials declined to state the reason.
