ASU Gammage brings Broadway to campus in 2016

Gammage II
Grady Gammage Memorial Auditorium is pictured facing Mill Avenue in Tempe on Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2016.

Following touring productions of “Wicked” and “Book of Mormon” in the fall, there is a full roster of upcoming shows at Gammage Auditorium for ASU students to explore this spring.

The semester opens Tuesday with the touring production of "If/Then," featuring Tony winner Idina Menzel reprising a role in a musical written specifically for her. The show runs until Jan. 17 and limited tickets are still available.

Gammage's schedule this spring includes:

  • "The Bridges of Madison County" from Feb. 16-21
  • "A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder" from March 15-20
  • "42nd Street" from April 5-10
  • "Annie" from May 4-8
  • "Newsies" from June 14-19

These shows bring the full Broadway experience to ASU, from the performances themselves to the chance to meet award-winning actors at the stage door. There is one show each month, with the engagements lasting for about five days each. All shows, except for "Annie," have an American Sign Language matinee performance listed on the Gammage website.

Wyatt Kent, an ASU graduate student seeking an masters degree in directing, said he believes that the important thing is for college students to go to the theater and not feel intimidated by the traditions and etiquette that surround it.

"College students should definitely come to the theater," Kent said. "Just act like you would in any other public situation. Don't be on your phone, don't talk and just generally be present and engage with the theater you're seeing."

Kent said the show he is most excited about coming to Gammage this semester is "The Bridges of Madison County," based on the 1992 best-selling novel. The show was performed on Broadway in 2014.

"I've been hearing great things about 'Bridges' and I was surprised to see it coming to Gammage," Kent said. "It's a fairly new show, and I didn't even know the tour had started yet."

Tara Mulligan, a junior arts administration student who will be participating in the Lyric Opera Theatre’s upcoming student production of “Grease,” said she is very excited about Gammage’s touring production of “If/Then."

Mulligan said that in addition to the wide variety of Broadway productions the auditorium brings to the ASU campus, Gammage provides opportunities for affordable tickets for students.

"Gammage offers student discounts and ticket lotteries, which I think is really great," she said. "I have friends who wouldn't have been able to see 'Wicked' when it came without the lottery because they tried and tried to get tickets and couldn't."

In addition to these opportunities for discounted tickets, Kari Amarosso, Gammage's public relations manager, said that tickets are very affordable and start at $25, however the best seats are reserved for season subscribers. To purchase tickets, go to ASUGammage.com or call the Gammage box office at 480-965-3434.
