After dropping its opening match to No. 26 Northwestern on Saturday, No. 27 ASU tennis rebounded with a sweep of No. 32 Notre Dame to wrap up the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Kick-Off Weekend.
"That's why we like to come to these tournaments, you get four really good teams," said head coach Sheila McInerney. "Win or lose you know you're going to get another really good match the next day."
It was a really good match, for one team at least.
In singles, each of the Sun Devils six competitors defeated their opponents. Freshman Sammi Hampton earned her second win in as many days while juniors Alexandra Osborne and Kassidy Jump each picked up victories as well as seal the deal for ASU.
The team also had success in doubles play. Junior Gussie O'Sullivan paired up with senior Desirae Krawczyk to defeat Notre Dame's juniors Mary Closs and Jane Fennelly 6-2. O'Sullivan replaced the injured senior Stephanie Vlad in ASU's top duo.
Notre Dame was unable to get a point and ASU won 4-0.
This came after a hard-fought match against Northwestern on Saturday in which ASU lost 4-2. Krawczyk lost her first match in more than two months to Northwestern's sophomore Maddie Lipp after winning both the ASU Thunderbird and Palm Springs Invitational.
"We knew going in it was going to be a tough match, you know with them being ranked a little bit higher than us," said McInerney. "It was one of those matches where it could have gone either way, and it went their way."
Senior Ebony Panoho kept ASU in the match with a win over Wildcats' senior Alicia Barnett in straight sets. Hampton earned the other victory in singles for the Sun Devils, but it wasn't quite enough.
The team now heads home to prepare for its first home duel match of the spring season against No. 43 Princeton on Thursday.
"We've got a really good team coming up in Princeton," McInerney said. "We'll get the day off tomorrow but after that we're right back at it."
