The ASU swim and dive men's team got a victory over University of Wyoming, but a tough seven-point loss plagued the women's.

The meet began with the 200-yard medley relay for the women swimmers. Wyoming's A-team defeated ASU, but ASU's B-team got third place, picking up an extra couple points.

ASU's men's side kicked the meet off on the right foot with a solid victory. The A team picked up 11 points with their 1:29.67 swim, more than a second ahead of the next team.

Junior distance swimmer Anna Olasz glided to victory in the 1000-yard freestyle, leading by a large margin the entirety of the swim. She finished in 10:14:31.

Senior distance swimmer Juan Tolosa was victorious in the same swim on the men's side, and junior Tim Schade earned third place. They scored a total of 12 points from the distance swim.

The ASU women were outstanding in the 200-yard freestyle, sweeping the Cowgirls and picking up 16 points. Junior Indira Ceranic, senior Marina Spadoni and freshman Krista Kolkebeck placed first, second and third, respectively.

ASU juniors Ingibjorg Jonsdottir and Richard Bohus won both of the 100-yard backstroke heats.

Wyoming then stormed back with three straight victories after ASU dominated the first eight events. The Cowgirls won the 100-yard breaststroke and the 200-yard butterfly, and the Cowboys won the 100-yard breaststroke with a B-cut finish from junior Gabriel Rooker of 54.52.

ASU's sophomore sprinter Patrick Park was able to right the ship with a victory in the 200-yard butterfly. He swam a B-cut time of 1:47.12.

For the last two races headed into the break, Wyoming won the 50 yard freestyle in both men's and women's swims. ASU juniors Alysha Bush and Tadas Duskinas placed second.

ASU got a big boost from the divers. Sophomore Mara Aiacoboae earned first place in the 1-meter dive and sophomore David Hoffer placed first in the 3-meter, earning ASU 11 points for both the men's and women's teams.

"With a few extra points here and there on my form and entry, I was able to be successful," David Hoffer said. "I have been working on some new dives and they worked well for me today."

At the break, ASU women led by nine and the men were up 16.

ASU came out with victories in the 100-yard freestyle from junior Alysha Bush and Bohus. Then, senior Jennifer Morgan and junior Barkley Perry won the 200-yard backstroke.

Wyoming wouldn't quit. It had consecutive wins in the men's and women's 200-yard breaststroke.

Kat Simonovic and Olasz had a friendly competition in the 500-yard freestyle. They were neck and neck until Simonovic pulled out the victory and Olasz finished second.

ASU women were swept in a crucial meet that proved to be the nail in the coffin. Wyoming got the top three places in the 100-yard butterfly, giving them sixteen points.

Duskinas won nine points in his was 100-yard butterfly victory, and junior Reid Elliott added three points with his third place finish.

ASU needed to win the 400-yard medley to get within striking distance. It finished second and third.

The women's team lost by just seven points.

The men struggled late in the 400-yard individual medley and the 400-yard freestyle relay, but they hung on, defeating the Cowboys by seven.

ASU's final home meet is against the University of Arizona Wildcats at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center in Tempe on Saturday, February 6 at 1 PM.
