Former Michigan swim coach Bob Bowman was hired as ASU's next swim coach, ASU athletics announced at a press conference Friday.

Bowman has trained Olympian Michael Phelps for most of Phelps's career, helping lead him to a record 18 Olympic gold medals.

Bowman, a six-time USA Swimming Coach of the Year, also coached Olympians Conor Dwyer and Allison Schmitt. He has been on every U.S. National Team staff since 2001.

As coach at Michigan from 2005-08, Bowman won Big Ten Coach of the Year in 2007 and 2008.

He replaces Dorsey Tierney-Walker, who coached ASU from 2009-15 before being fired earlier this month.

Bowman will join Mark Bradshaw, who is ASU's dive coach.
