ASU athletic director Ray Anderson notified Dorsey Tierney-Walker that she would not be returning as ASU swim and dive head coach on Tuesday morning.
"I want to thank Dorsey for her service to ASU," Anderson said in a statement. "As it is with all changes in leadership, this decision was not made without a lot of thought and care. Our athletics department, university and community expect our swimming program to compete for individual, conference and national titles, and produce All-Americans and Olympians."
Tierney-Walker took over as head coach in the 2009 season and spent the last six years at the helm of the program, where she failed to produce results toward the end of her tenure.
In her time as head coach, she coached four Pac-12 Champions and 26 All-Americans.
In 2012, she led the women's swimming team to a 12th place finish in NCAAs, which remains program's highest finish since 2005.
Per a source who has asked to remain anonymous, there was an inclination that Tierney-Walker would be let go due to the lack of production in recent years and the fact that the men didn't earn a single point at the NCAA Championships this year.
According to the same source, Tierney-Walker did not come into the season knowing it could be the final straw, but the notion gained steam as the season progressed.
There appears to be no inclination of coaches who are on the radar to take over the program.
"We will conduct a national search for a head coach that is best fit for our program, university and community," Anderson said.
However, it is up to the future coach to retain or let go members of Tierney-Walker's staff.
Regardless, ASU head diving coach Mark Bradshaw will return next season.
