Broad on a Budget

Valentine's Day is just around the corner, and if you're worried about finding a way to fill the longest day of the Hallmark card year, I've got you covered.

Tempe and downtown Phoenix offer a range of events that you can attend solo, with amigos or with your partner in crime. So put down the credit card and stop with that $50 Edible Arrangement order. Scratch that expensive dinner for two and maybe tell that creepy guy that wanted to take you to "Fifty Shades of Grey" that you're going to be a little too busy. Here's a few events and ideas that will keep you from breaking your heart and your wallet.

The way to a man's heart is through his stomach. And your girlfriend is probably a lot cooler with fast food than you think. What better way to celebrate Valentine's Day than showing your affection on the patio of the Chick-Fil-A on Mill Avenue. Feel free to sport your sweats or your favorite dress — either attire is encouraged. Reserve seating online for five, six or seven p.m. and get a little fancy with your favorite chicken sandwich joint. Reservations are free

Come join empowered men and women alike at The Pressroom in downtown Phoenix for a performance of Eve Ensler's "The Vagina Monologues." The main beneficiary of the evening is The Arizona Coalition to End Sexual and Domestic Violence, and what a better day to go support the female spirit than on a day of worldwide expression of healthy love. Tickets range from $10 to $25, and feature a discount for students. Doors open at 7 p.m., and the production begins at 8 p.m. The featured One Billion Rising Party & Performances run from 9:30 p.m to 2 a.m. Find more information and order tickets here.

None of the above suit your fancy? Check out special movie feature showings, hit up all of the beautiful areas on campus for a good old-fashioned picnic or take a hike to catch the sunset. Show some love to that heart of yours by getting your pulse up. But by all means, keep it simple. Happy Valentine's day, you thrifty kids.
