Tempe Police: Man tries to return skateboard he didn't buy

Tempe Police reported the following incidents Thursday:

A 33-year-old Mesa man was arrested Sept. 6 on the 5000 block of South Arizona Mills Circle on suspicion of organized retail theft, according to a police report.

The man walked in the store with empty hands and picked up a skateboard, police reported. He asked an employee if it was OK to ride in the store and began to do so, according to the report.

The man went to the register and tried to return the skateboard that he just picked up in the store, police reported.

The man decided to cancel the return after he was told only a partial value can be returned and rode the skateboard out into the parking lot, police reported.

When the store told him it wouldn’t return the full value of the skateboard, he left intending to sell it at Play It Again Sports, according to the report.

As the man was gaining speed on the skateboard, an officer ran after him and attempted to stop him, police reported.

According to the report, the skateboard went forward and both the man and a police officer fell to the ground.

The man told officers that he took the skateboard to get some money for a taxi ride to see his kids, police reported.

The man was booked at Tempe City jail, police reported.

An 18-year-old Laveen man was arrested Sept. 7 at the 3000 block of McClintock Drive on suspicion for carrying a concealed weapon in a vehicle and possession of marijuana, according to a police report.

An officer stopped a car for speeding, where the man was riding as a passenger, police reported.

According to the report, a strong marijuana smell came out of the car as an officer approached the car to speak with the driver.

Officers searched the man and a green flake of marijuana fell to the ground off his shirt, police reported.

An officer searched the car and found a usable amount of marijuana on the front passenger’s seat, according to the report.

The man also told officers there was a gun he owned in the car, police reported.

A silver and brown Smith and Wesson revolver was found in the vehicle, which he told officers he bought when he was 17 years old, police reported.

The man said he didn’t know the serial number was defaced, as he never took off the handle of the revolver, police reported.

The man was transported to Tempe City Jail, booked and released pending charges, according to the police report.
