First-year coach Shawn Charles gets his first chance to show off this year’s ASU wrestling team when its season opens on the road against two Pac-10 opponents this weekend.
The No. 17 Sun Devils will face UC Davis Friday night and then travel to Cal State Fullerton for a match Sunday afternoon.
“We’ve been training since early September for this day,” Charles said. “I’m pumped.”
ASU’s lineup includes eight returners in junior Anthony Robles (125 pounds), junior Chris Drouin (141), sophomore Vicente Varela (149), sophomore Te Edwards (157), sophomore Kyle DeBerry (165), sophomore Eric Starks (174), sophomore Jake Meredith (184) and senior Erik Nye (285) and two newcomers in junior Ben Ashmore (125) and redshirt freshman Michael Hawkins (197).
Last season, UC Davis finished one spot ahead of the Sun Devils in the Pac-10 championship with 102.5 points to ASU’s 101.
Cal State Fullerton finished eighth in the Pac-10 last season.
Charles said these first matchups give the team a chance to see what else they need to work on.
“We just have to go out there and get battle-tested,” Charles said. “We’ve got to find out where our guys are mentally and physically.”
ASU was previously 15-0 against Cal State Fullerton but has lost the last three dual matches to the Titans.
The Sun Devils have a perfect 4-0 record against UC Davis.
