Valenteens Bash entertains, raises money for autism research

Local live bands, a fashion show, raffles and free food drew a crowd of hundreds to Tempe Marketplace this Saturday to raise money for charity at the “AZ Valenteens Bash.”

The event, which catered to teenagers, was sponsored by the 104.7 KISS-FM radio station, Cricket Wireless and Mojo Yogurt. But the real ringleaders were the girls with azTeen Magazine.

Deb Rochford, publisher of azTeen Magazine, has organized the event for three years now and came up with the event’s title and concept.

Michelle Burgess, editor in chief of azTeen Magazine and State Press alumna, spent the event singing along with the live music as she directed the magazine’s interns.

Spectators were charged $1 at the entrance, and all proceeds were donated to the Southwest Autism Resource and Research Center.

The event is all about “connection in the community,” said Rochford.

An NBA All-Star fashion show began the festivities Saturday night as teen models from Ford Modeling Agency walked the runway in gear affiliated with the All Star Western Conference.

Cedric Ceballos, a former Phoenix Suns forward acted as the master of ceremonies for the fashion show, detailing the models’ clothes as they took the stage.

Official NBA All-Star jerseys, jackets, T-shirts and tanks were a part of the models’ wardrobe. Sporting goods stores like Just Sports and Sports Chalet, both located at Tempe Marketplace, provided the entire wardrobe.

Second in the lineup were local rock bands “Autumn and Cambridge,” and “This Century,” which performed on Tempe Marketplace’s District Stage through the night.

Rochford said it was important to bring in young and local talent so they would “have the opportunity to just play.”

The event attracted an audience of diverse ages and interests.

Samantha Bock, a businesses management sophomore, found out about the event from flyers posted around town.

“I’m always looking for new bands to check out,” she said. “It’s always nice to catch a concert that’s really affordable.”
