Connor Greenwall:

Welcome back to the podcast! Today is the start of college media madness, so we dove into how the State Press handles breaking news. I’m Connor Greenwall, and this is State Press Play

Connor Greenwall:

Breaking news is a big part of what we do here at the State Press, but stories come and go so quickly, there is hardly time to appreciate the work our reporters do. So today I am here with three key members of the State Press, and they are going to help break down how we report on breaking news and the challenges that arrive from it. Let's start with going around and having everybody tell me a bit about themselves and their role at the State Press.

Senna James:

I'm Senna James, and I'm the community and culture editor.

Quinton Kendall:

I'm Quinton Kendall. I am the visuals editor and photographer.

Alysa Horton:

My name is Alysa Horton, and I'm the Digital Editor in Chief.

Connor Greenwall:

And just to start, Could everybody tell me a breaking news story that they covered that stood out to them the most, and why it stood out to them?

Alysa Horton:

Yeah, I can take it away first, if that's okay. Last year in end of April, I believe it was I got to cover the pro Palestine protest that occurred on on a campus lawn. And I think the most monumental thing that I learned about this was how quickly breaking news happens and how quickly, like one small incident can transform into being an all day endeavor. And my favorite part about breaking news is how quickly it can change and how much your story has to constantly evolve. I've always really loved breaking news. It's one of my favorite things to cover. I love that it's one day in, one day out. I think that those quick turns are like, one of my favorite things about it. And covering that pro Palestine protest where they set up an encampment on the lawn was just phenomenal experience for me.

Quinton Kendall:

Yeah, I think the most notable breaking coverage I've done actually wasn't for the State Press, but recently we had a bunch of those immigration protests break out kind of in Phoenix and that area. And yeah, there were a couple that definitely were the most intense situations I've been in. It's weird to be like in the middle of the dynamic of like protesters and riot police and things like that. It's a weird place to be as like a journalist, I feel like you're not taking a side, but you got to be there, and you got to kind of be aware and all that stuff. So I was that was pretty intense and definitely a learning experience for me.

Senna James:

Totally, when I did breaking news, one of the most memorable things was when I covered the stabbing that happened on West Campus. I think that was a pretty big story, and being able to get on it first was really interesting, especially like contacting the police and things like that. I wasn't like on scene when it happened, but just kind of deep, diving into what happened and then getting it out pretty quickly, because it was like such an urgent story was really interesting. And then kind of deep diving into a more updated story was really cool. And I, I think it was very like a big learning experience for me, especially with how much I had to read through and watch.
